Dice Game: Aces
This game probably requires more dice than any other dice game. Each player must have five dice at the start of the game.
Playing Time: From 10 to 20 minutes.
Number of Players: Any number can play.
Number of Dice: Five for each player.
Equipment: A dice cup for each player, if possible.
Object of Game: To be the player who rolls the last ace; in a bar game, to avoid being the player who rolls the last ace.
To Start: Each player rolls the five dice to determine the order of play. In this roll, each ace counts as seven pips instead of one. The player whose roll produces the highest total goes first. Ties are broken by a playoff roll. Play proceeds clockwise.
The Play: The first player begins the game by rolling their five dice.
All aces produced by this cast are placed in the center of the playing area.
All 2’s are passed to the player to the caster’s left.
All 5’s are passed to the player to the caster’s right.
The first player continues to roll their dice until they make a cast which produces neither an ace, a 2, nor a 5, or until they have no dice left to throw.
The player to the first player’s left then rolls their dice (their own five plus any dice the first player may have passed to them). They place all aces in the center of the player area and pass all 2’s and 5’s to the players on their left and right, respectively. They continue rolling until a cast produces neither an ace, a 2, nor a 5, or until they have no dice left to throw.
Note that a player is not out of the game when they have no dice remaining, the players to their left and right may pass dice to them from rolling 2’s or 5’s in their turn.
Play continues clockwise in this fashion until all dice except one has been placed in the center of the playing area. At this point the player holding the last die in play casts that die.
If this player rolls an ace, they win the game. If they roll a 2, they pass the die to the player to their left; if they roll a 5, they pass the die to the player on their right. If the cast produces any other number (3, 4, or 6), the player rolls again until they casts one of the significant numbers (1, 2, or 5).
The final die passes from player to player in this manner until the lucky player rolls the ace 🙂
